After working in data for 8+ years and building teams across industries, I’ve learned that certain things matter more than others when it comes to long-term career satisfaction. So, whether you’re starting fresh or leveling up, here are 3 things to look for in your next job:
1. Growth Opportunities (Not Just a “Good Job Now”)
It’s easy to focus on landing the role, but what comes after you’re hired is just as important. Ask yourself:
- Will this role help me develop the skills I want for my long-term career goals?
- Does the company invest in employee growth (e.g., training, mentorship, promotions)?
- Are there clear paths for advancement or opportunities to take on bigger challenges?
In my career, I’ve seen people thrive in roles where they were given the chance to learn and grow, even if they didn’t check every box on Day 1. Look for roles that challenge you, support your development, and align with where you want to go.
💡 Tip: During interviews, ask, “Can you share examples of how team members have grown or advanced within the company?” The answer will give you a good sense of the growth culture.
2. Team and Culture Fit
Let’s face it, you can be doing your dream job, but if the team culture isn’t a match, it’s going to be a struggle. The people you work with and the company’s values play a huge role in your day-to-day happiness.
Here’s what to look for:
- Team Collaboration: Do they value teamwork and communication?
- Leadership Style: Will your manager support and empower you?
- Work Environment: Does the company prioritize work-life balance and employee well-being?
In my experience, thriving in a job isn’t just about the work itself, it’s about feeling like you belong, your contributions matter, and you’re supported by those around you.
💡 Tip: Look for clues during the interview process. How do the people you meet interact with each other? Are they engaged, respectful, and genuinely excited about the team?
3. Alignment with Your Values
Your job is where you spend most of your waking hours, so it’s important to work somewhere that aligns with your values and passions. This might include:
- Company Mission: Do you believe in the company’s purpose or goals?
- Industry Impact: Are they making a positive difference in their industry or community?
- Ethics and Diversity: Does the company prioritize diversity, inclusion, and ethical practices?
For example, when I started in data, I was more focused on just getting the job. But over time, I realized that working on projects that truly interested me—and for a company whose values aligned with mine, made all the difference in my motivation and success.
💡 Tip: Research the company’s mission and initiatives online. If something feels “off” or unaligned with your values, trust your gut.
A Quick Recap
When looking for your next job, focus on these 3 things:

The Bottom Line
The “perfect job” doesn’t exist, but the right fit for you does. Take the time to think about what matters most in your next role, and don’t settle for less. The right job should not only challenge you but also support your growth and align with your goals and values.
Remember: You’re not just looking for a job, you’re building a career. Choose wisely, and the rest will follow.
